Obama Doublespeak on Gay Marriage

On May 15, the California Supreme Court issued a ruling on marriage which stated that the state’s constitution protects the right of same-sex couples to marry. In doing so, the court overruled the state’s voters. In 2000, 61 percent of California voters approved a ballot measure that said “only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in California.”

If the California Supreme Court had interpreted the state’s constitution from a strict constructionist point of view, instead of from a liberal “living document” point of view, no such “right” would have been found, because no such “right” exists. It is a contrivance of the basest variety, which comes purely from the imaginative interpretation of the state’s constitution by liberal activist judges.

It is interesting to note that, in a recent article on MSNBC.com – a notably liberal outlet for political news – B. Hussein Obama, as his detractors refer to him, issued a statement through his campaign which said that he:

has always believed that same-sex couples should enjoy equal rights under the law, and he will continue to fight for civil unions as President. He respects the decision of the California Supreme Court, and continues to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage.

What is interesting is that Senator Obama claims to believe that states should make their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage, but he is quoted in that same article as saying:

I oppose the divisive and discriminatory efforts to amend the California Constitution, and similar efforts to amend the U.S. Constitution or those of other states.

What Senator Obama should have had is campaign say in the statement they released was: “Senator Obama supports judges imposing social policy changes on the electorate, when it comes to the issue of gay marriage.”

Senator Obama seems to be just fine with states making their own decisions when it comes to the issue of marriage, as long as those decisions are made by liberal activist judges. If, however, the people vote in a referendum to amend their state’s constitution in order to overturn a decision made by liberal activist judges which imposes social policy changes on the electorate, Senator Obama is against those efforts.
